Ottawa (March 23, 2009) - The City of Ottawa unveiled its list of infrastructure priority projects today. Once approved by Council, the list of ready-to-go infrastructure projects will be submitted to the Federal Government for funding consideration under the economic stimulus package announced in the 2009 Federal Budget. “This will accelerate the completion of transit, asset renewal and construction projects we otherwise would not have started this year,” says Mayor Larry O’Brien. ”These investments will also boost the local economy, create much needed jobs and leave a lasting legacy for our City.” The stimulus package provides municipalities with funding above and beyond what is currently in place with the Building Canada Fund, gas tax revenues and the GST rebate. The total project list represents approximately $637 million potential investment in Ottawa, requiring an estimated $189 million in City contributions. It would also contribute to the creation of over 7,300 jobs in the City of Ottawa. To qualify for funding from the Federal economic stimulus package, each identified project has to be construction-ready but not previously scheduled for this year. As well, the projects that receive funding are to be completed within the next two years. Staff developed the list after extensive consultation with the Mayor and Council as well as the Federal and Provincial governments. Projects were itemized to reflect Council’s priorities, particularly in regards to transit investment, and maintenance and renewal of City-owned assets. “Council has previously directed transit projects as their first priority,” acknowledges Nancy Schepers, Deputy City Manager, Infrastructure Services and Community Sustainability. “In addition other projects have been identified spanning a number of critical areas that will contribute to long-term community sustainability and are consistent with Council’s stated priorities. Those areas include infrastructure renewal, social housing, recreation and culture.” Since funding requirements specify that projects must be completed by March 2011, the City has been working with the construction industry to ensure the projects can be completed on time. At the Mayor’s Infrastructure Roundtable meetings in February and March, the Mayor, City officials and the construction industry discussed amending the procurement process so projects could proceed as quickly as possible. “I want to acknowledge the time and effort from our industry partners in working with the City of Ottawa to make sure we have the procedures in place and are prepared to get started on these projects immediately once we receive funding,’ says Mayor O’Brien.” Visit ottawa.ca to view the list of ready-to-go infrastructure priority projects.
