East-end City Councillors are urging the Federal Government to protect the Greenbelt when it comes to an interprovincial bridge.

Councillors Bob Monette, Rainer Bloess and Rob Jellet, along with Common Sense Crossings, met with Transport Minister John Baird to express opposition to the addition of two Greenbelt options to the study for a new bridge over the Ottawa River.

Two of the options cross over Lower Duck Island and into the Ottawa Greenbelt. The third option would see the bridge built at Kettle Island, linking up with the Aviation Parkway.

Jellet says a bridge across the Greenbelt would "worsen the traffic problems of East Ottawa and of the 417/174 split."

The National Capital Commission is conducting an environmental impact study of a new bridge connecting Ontario and Quebec.
